[Dinner is served late in the mess hall because it's a grand banquet in honor of the Magistrate of Kibo. It's a pretty modest celebration, all things considered: the people at Kibo are invited, along with her family, any Searing Wind members who feel like dropping in from wherever they've been as of late, and a few friends among the other Keepers of the Vigil. That's about it.

Still, Kalika looks like she's having fun. Her husband and her children are, of course, all in attendance, together with her husband's familiars and the entire division of the Strays from Seigi. The food, mind you, is excellent, and there is more than enough booze.

You're welcome to come and go as you please. Kalika's easy like that.]

[While Taning certainly does not know anything about that, he does know that where Hikaru and Alistair are in the same general vicinity and there is possibly something wrong with Hikaru, one could trust Alistair to be concerned.

To be perfectly fair, though, Alistair is probably always concerned. It is the nature of the beast, he supposes.

He won't ask. If Alistair tells him anything about it, then that will just be a bonus.]

Of course. At any rate, Brother Wolf seems to appreciate your presence more than he seems to be appreciating the presence of this throng. Even if he does look like he does.

[Initially, Alistair's only response to that is a noncommittal noise, and him taking another drag from his cigarette.]

[Which just makes him feel guilty that he cannot people, and so on, and so forth.]

I certainly hope not, sir. Because he seems... somewhat unhappy, really.

Doesn't mean he isn't happy to see you.

[Drag, exhale.]

If it was truly terrible, he wouldn't be here.

[That's... certainly true.

He nods at that.]

Which is part of why you are here, sir? Because he is? [And then, hurriedly:] I'm sorry, you don't have to say anything to that, I don't mean to presume.

[Because he's never bothered hiding the fact that Hikaru is his world, or at least a big part of it.]

Kalika is family too.

[He lights up in silence, content to let the man say something else, if he will. If he doesn't, well, Inquisitor Mordechai was never one for many words, anyway. But if he does, well... he'll stick around for the possibility. Whatever he ends up saying is most probably gonna be interesting. Men who use few words have the tendency to make their words count, after all.]
