[Dinner is served late in the mess hall because it's a grand banquet in honor of the Magistrate of Kibo. It's a pretty modest celebration, all things considered: the people at Kibo are invited, along with her family, any Searing Wind members who feel like dropping in from wherever they've been as of late, and a few friends among the other Keepers of the Vigil. That's about it.

Still, Kalika looks like she's having fun. Her husband and her children are, of course, all in attendance, together with her husband's familiars and the entire division of the Strays from Seigi. The food, mind you, is excellent, and there is more than enough booze.

You're welcome to come and go as you please. Kalika's easy like that.]

Honestly? I would have been a few months back. Things have improved immensely between us since then, though.

[Smiling, looking just a little rueful.]

I never thought it could happen. It's... nice, being on the same page as him.

[He just wishes it could be that way between him and Josh again.]

Kind of like a best friend you just grow old with?

[ Not that either of them really grow older as usual people do. ]

Yeah, kinda like that. If you're stuck with someone for a while, might as well try to be as good to each other as you can, right?

[And yes, he and Alistair are kind of a forever... thing.]

That's a really nice way of putting it.

[ She smiles at him reassuringly. ]

Things will be okay. Just not immediately, but I bet you know that already.

Mm, they always do work out somehow.

[But something about his tone and the look in his eyes betrays him. Yes, they always work out. However, they don't always work out in your favor. He knows that for a fact.]

[ ...right. Catching that but letting a moment breeze by before speaking. ]

But somehow that thought doesn't really comfort you.

It just gets hard sometimes, even for me, to see how the end result equates to "working out the way it's supposed to".

[And even that little stipulation did not give one any assurance that they'd end up with what they hoped for. What they wanted.]

You know you have time on your side, so to speak.

[ She looks off, talking in a way that her thoughts directly translates to what she says. This is usually what she does when she says something serious but funny but dumb but kind of smart at the same time? ]

Besides it's only going to be the end when we're all dead, so.

True. Still, I've got time... some of the people I care for don't have anything else beyond what's been given to them.

[Okay. Time for a cigarette.

[Taking long drag, smiling that same rueful smile.]

I just need a bit of time to recover. I think I know what I want to do, you know, about this little situation.

[ She wants to understand you, Hikaru. And no, she won't tell a single soul. But you know that already. ]

I'll wait for him to come around. I'm his for as long as he'll have me.

[And it's going to be hard, dwelling in his own head, trying not to think about all of those possibilities. Believing.

He hopes, quietly, that it isn't going to end up ruining him.]

[ That makes Brianna sad.

She settles in to hug Hikaru from the side, resting her head on his shoulder. ]

You're the same as him, you know?

Am I? That's a little hard to say these days, isn't it?

[Wow yeah okay, pausing to take a drag from his cigarette.

This is hard.]

[ Pulling away to look him in the eye. ]

Actually... It's especially easy to tell these days.

Oh?

[And he's glancing your way again, and looking, for the lack of a better term, lost. Do enlighten him.]

Both of you just want each other to be happy. Josh is so selfless, and so are you.

[ She sighs. ]

Both of you fight so hard to protect other people but you seldom fight for what would make you really happy. Love's not supposed to be complex, you know.

[And truer words have not been spoken often enough. He's pensive as he turns away from her, focusing, for a moment, on his own thoughts.]

I suppose it's hard for me to act because I don't want to lose him. Do you really think I should push a little more?

You know him more than I do, so maybe just think about what worked in the past with you guys? If it's anything, people do like being reminded that they're wanted especially when something like this happens. Just let him know that, daddy.

[ Softer now. ]

Pretty sure he doesn't want to lose you either.

I'll have to take your word for it there.

[Smiling again, though, and moving in just long enough to kiss her cheek.]

Thanks. I'll try to do that soon.

[ Returning that with a squeeze on the hand. ]

[And grateful, beyond words, for the fact that there are people like you in his life now. Maybe that goes without saying.]

[ She's smiling now, happy to have done something or well, said something nice that made Hikaru kind of feel better, by her estimation anyway. She's positive that things will work out for both of them, eventually. ]

I'll try to. Might just settle for eating a lot.
