[Dinner is served late in the mess hall because it's a grand banquet in honor of the Magistrate of Kibo. It's a pretty modest celebration, all things considered: the people at Kibo are invited, along with her family, any Searing Wind members who feel like dropping in from wherever they've been as of late, and a few friends among the other Keepers of the Vigil. That's about it.

Still, Kalika looks like she's having fun. Her husband and her children are, of course, all in attendance, together with her husband's familiars and the entire division of the Strays from Seigi. The food, mind you, is excellent, and there is more than enough booze.

You're welcome to come and go as you please. Kalika's easy like that.]

[Which visibly pleases Gideon. Kaz is, after all, Neeka's grandson.]

[ That makes her feel so much better, and it shows. Good thing she chose to talk to Gideon since there's no lying to him. o__o ]

It can be. Other times, though, it's a little scary.

The Song of Measuring bares the entire soul of a person out to me in the form of music. Even if I didn't want to see what they were really like, I don't have a choice.

[Especially since it's always on these days, so to speak. He's grown strong.]

Oh, okay I understand how that can be quite... [ She exhales. ] extreme?

'Extreme' would be a really mild way of putting it.

I learned to deal eventually. Still, there are times when it feels a bit too much like a violation of privacy, or grounds to be paranoid.

I can imagine that. But if there's anything you taught me, it's how to use your gifts properly.

[ She's actually really glad Gideon taught her - probably one of the reasons why she didn't go crazy with power. o_o ]

So that's the lesson you took away the most from my classes? That's more than enough for me.

Well, one of the many. [ She says that with a small laugh. Gideon is one of the people that reminds her of how she was before - and how far she's gone since then. So yeah, she is very thankful. ]

[Ah, it makes him all warm and fuzzy inside when his former students come back to express some sort of gratitude for his classes.

So what's it been like for you, being Hikaru's newest daughter?

[ She pauses for a bit with an amused smile. ]

Not what I thought it'd be like, but I'm not really complaining.

Oh? What did you think it'd be like?

[Because he's honestly curious.]

For starters, fun.

[ She catches herself there. ]

I mean, it is still fun, but that's before I found out what really happens inside hunting conspiracies. There's a lot of tragedy.

Oh, I think the Vigil has as much beauty and tragedy as any place. It all depends on what you choose to focus on.

[Heh. Old man moment.]

[therealbrianna]

[ ...might as well. ]

Well, you've been here a while, sir. How'd you handle it all?

[Laughs, looking rueful.]

I can't say that I handled things as well as I could have. It's a constant balancing act. Still... taking breaks and being with friends and family tend to help plenty.

[ Brianna gives Gideon an empathetic look. ]

Thankfully, that's exactly what I'm doing now, and will be for a good part of the month.

Excellent. And that reminds me... how is Roy?

[He knows, of course, about the fact that your family adopted him.]

[ The thought of Roy makes her smile. ]

He's getting a long very well with my other siblings and I'd like to think he's happy with us!

[artedelrumore]

[Nodding, looking pleased.]

I've not doubt he is. Your parents are good people, and you're not so bad yourself for a kid.

Awww, thank you! I try to be.

[ This is true, she's been trying not to use her powers for irrelevant things like gossiping, being in places where she shouldn't be... o_o ]

Trying's usually more than enough.

[And cigarette time. He's been cutting down, but tonight's a special night.]
